What is a jewel loan, and how do you manage it?
Updated 2026-09-12
A jewel loan — a gold loan, or girvi — is money you lend against gold a customer pledges: you hold the jewels, charge interest over time, return them on repayment, and auction unredeemed pledges after the agreed period. It’s a different business from retail, and it’s best run that way. JewelGrow manages it as its own business on the same system — pledge to redemption to auction — with its own double-entry ledgers and a dedicated jewel-stock ledger, so it never gets tangled with your retail billing.
The mistake is treating pledged gold like retail stock. It isn’t yours to sell, the interest accrues over time, and the books have to stay separate and clean.
The whole cycle, in one place
A pledge records the customer, the jewels, weight, purity and loan amount. Interest accrues as time passes; part-payments are tracked; redemption returns the jewels on repayment; and unredeemed pledges go to auction after the agreed period. Every step is on the system, not in a separate register.
Its own money, its own stock
Jewel loan keeps its own ledgers and a dedicated jewel-stock ledger for what you’re holding — so your lending book and your retail book each stay clean, and you always know what’s pledged, what’s due and what’s yours.
One system, two businesses
Because it runs on the same JewelGrow, you don’t buy or learn a second system to add a loan counter. Retail and jewel loan sit side by side, each with the right books. (Jewel loan is in early access — we’ll set it up with you.)
Common questions
What is a jewel loan?
A jewel loan (gold loan / girvi) is money lent against gold a customer pledges. You hold the pledged jewels, charge interest over time, return them on repayment (redemption), and auction unredeemed pledges after the agreed period. It's a lending business, run alongside retail.
Why manage it as a separate business?
Because the money and the stock work differently from retail — pledges aren't your stock to sell, interest accrues over time, and the ledgers must stay separate and clean. JewelGrow runs jewel loan as its own business on the same system, so it doesn't get tangled with retail billing.
What does JewelGrow track through the loan?
The whole cycle — pledge (customer, jewels, weight, purity, loan amount), interest as it accrues, part-payments, redemption, and auction of unredeemed pledges — with double-entry ledgers and a dedicated jewel-stock ledger for what you're holding.
Does it stay separate from my retail accounts?
Yes. Jewel loan keeps its own ledgers and jewel-stock, so your lending book and your retail book each stay clean — while both live on one JewelGrow you already run.
